For the Macaroni:

For the Cheese Sauce:

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk warmed
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese shredded
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese grated
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika optional


Cook the Macaroni

  • Boil Water: In a large pot, bring 4 quarts of water to a boil. Add 1 tablespoon of salt to the water.

Prepare the Cheese Sauce

Assemble and Bake

  • Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish lightly with butter or cooking spray.
  • Combine Macaroni and Sauce: Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce, stirring gently until all the pasta is well coated.
  • Prepare Topping: In a small bowl, combine 1 cup of Panko breadcrumbs, 2 tablespoons of melted unsalted butter, 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan cheese, and 1/4 teaspoon of paprika (if using).
  • Layer and Bake: Transfer the macaroni mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top.
  • Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the sauce is bubbly.
