It is now praised for both its adaptability and deep, strong flavor.

We’re going to be sharing a really simple yet amazingly delicious marinara sauce today that you can use with pasta, pizza, or any other food that looks or tastes Italian.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 large can 28 ounces
  • 1 tbsp of sea salt
  • 1/2 tbsp of freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tbsp of sugar
  • 1/2 tbsp of red pepper flakes optional
  • 1 tbsp of dried oregano
  • 1 tbsp of dried basil
  • 1 bay leaf
  • A handful of fresh basil leaves, torn for garnish

Instructions
 

  • Start by gathering all the ingredients and preparing them. Finely chop the onion and mince the garlic cloves. Having everything ready at the beginning will make the cooking process smoother and more enjoyable.
  • In a large saucepan or skillet, heat the extra virgin olive oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the chopped onions. Sauté them until they become translucent, about 5-7 minutes. This step is crucial as it helps to develop the base flavor of the sauce.
    Next, add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly to prevent the garlic from burning. The aroma at this stage should be wonderfully fragrant.

     

  • Carefully pour in the can of whole peeled tomatoes. Using a wooden spoon, break the tomatoes into smaller pieces to help them cook down. Alternatively, you can crush them with your hands before adding them to the pan for a chunkier texture.
  • Add the sea salt, freshly ground black pepper, sugar, red pepper flakes (if using), dried oregano, and dried basil. Stir well to combine all the ingredients. The sugar helps to balance the acidity of the tomatoes, enhancing the overall flavor of the sauce.
  • Add the bay leaf to the mixture. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer gently. Allow it to cook for at least 30-45 minutes, stirring occasionally. This slow cooking process allows the flavors to meld together, resulting in a rich and hearty marinara sauce.

     

  • Once the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency, remove it from the heat. Discard the bay leaf. Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if necessary, adding more salt or pepper as desired.
    For a smoother sauce, you can use an immersion blender to puree the sauce to your preferred texture. If you enjoy a chunkier sauce, you can leave it as is.
  • Before serving, stir in the fresh basil leaves. Their vibrant flavor and color add a final touch of authenticity to the sauce.
